Confirmation at St. Basil the Great
Our Confirmation program is a two-year journey of faith that begins in 9th grade and culminates with the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation in May of a student’s 10th grade year. (For example – if you are entering 9th grade in the Fall of 2026, you could be in the Confirmation Class of 2028). Throughout these two years, teens grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith, and become more active members of the Church through prayer, the sacraments, service, and community
Confirmation is a sacrament—just like First Holy Communion and Marriage—and it deserves the same intentional time of preparation. Our program is designed to help each teen not simply receive the sacrament, but embrace the lifelong mission of living as a disciple of Christ, strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Program Outline
All candidates are expected to complete the following requirements over the course of the two years in order to be eligible for the Sacrament of Confirmation:
- Attend 8 Life Nights
- Attend one retreat
- Attend one service night
- Attend Confirmation Sessions #1-#4 (Each session is offered once per year, and each candidate only needs to attend each session once. For example, if you attend Session #1 in 2026 then you do not need to attend Session #1 in 2027. Alternatively, if you’re unable to attend Session #1 in 2026, you would then be required to attend Session #1 in 2027).

Register for Confirmation
Registration is now open to all 9th graders seeking to make their Confirmation in the Spring of 2028. All applicants must be a registered parishioner of St. Basil the Great. If you are not a current parishioner, please contact Katie Rosen for next steps on becoming a parishioner or seeking permission from your home parish.
There is a $30 fee for participating in the program to help cover sacramental costs; however, scholarships are available for those in need. Please contact Katie for more information on scholarships.

Sponsor & Saint Information
Choosing Your Confirmation Sponsor
A Sponsor for Confirmation needs to be:
- A practicing, faith-filled Catholic who has received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
- If married, their marriage must also be in good standing with the Catholic Church.
- At least 16 years of age.
- Someone who is NOT a parent of the candidate.
- Able to form a relationship with the Candidate and willing to share his/her own experience of faith.
- Willing to give the time to participate in the sacramental preparation process and to pray for the Candidate.
Choosing Your Confirmation Name
When choosing your Confirmation name, consider:
- You may be confirmed in your Baptismal name. By keeping your Baptismal name, rather than choosing a new Confirmation name, it reaffirms your Baptismal name and strengthens the connection between the two sacraments.
- If a new name is chosen, selecting a saint’s name is common practice. One should choose a saint they admire and wish to emulate in the Christian life.
Need help researching saint names?
All confirmation sponsors must provide a sponsor certificate.
This form must be requested by the sponsor. They can do so by calling their home parish and asking for a “Sponsor Certificate” or “Certificate of Good Standing.” This certificate must be signed by the sponsor’s pastor. Once completed, please mail the certificate to Katie Rosen at:

Confirmation Liturgy FAQ’s
What Should Candidates Wear to Confirmation?
Think “Sunday best”! Girls should wear a modest dress or skirt and guys should wear dress pants, a sport coat and tie. It’s customary for candidates to wear white but it’s not required.
How long does the Confirmation Liturgy last?
Depending on the celebrant, the Confirmation Liturgy can last anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours.
What time should family and friends arrive at the Confirmation Liturgy?
We recommend arriving about 30min beforehand (or even earlier depending on how many seats you need). There is no limit to the number of people each candidate is allowed to invite. All seating is first come first serve.
Where do candidates and sponsors sit during the liturgy?
Candidates and sponsors will have assigned seating at the front of the church. Those with last names A-K will sit on the Mary side and those with last names L-Z will sit on the St. Joseph side.
When do candidates receive their Confirmation certificate?
Candidates can pick up their certificate in the gathering area of the church directly after the liturgy.
